Automated deburring

Automated deburring versus manual workplaces – CNC post-processing is changing

Precision and rigid production – automated deburring relieves manual workers

Automation is being driven forcefully in engineering as well, replacing manual workplaces by deburring cells. The technology of automated deburring stands out positively in particular in post-processing of workpieces from small and medium-sized series. Larger piece numbers in short periods of time and an extremely high precision of up to 0.1 mm speak a clear language – manual workplaces cannot reach such figures. Is automated deburring truly better than manual workplaces are, though?

What is automated deburring?

Automated deburring takes place though deburring systems that deburr parts up to 400 mm via tool-or workpiece-controlled systems. These deburring cells are equipped with 5 axes. This permits a 3D-guided deburring and even fine deburring of complex workpieces. Post-processing via a round or change table also permits parallel supply during the main times for speeding up production with higher piece numbers and increased precision.

Manual workplaces versus automated deburring

In Germany alone, 6,062,562 motor vehicles were manufactured in 2016. Production requires small parts that rely on precise post-processing for use. In light of these high production numbers, management of post processing of these parts via manual workplaces is hardly possible. Automated deburring is to remedy this. The following comparison shows how effective deburring cells truly are:

Benefits of automated deburring

  • Easy Integration of the deburring cells into existing production lines
  • No loss from illness
  • High precision by lane-specific deburring up to fine deburring of complex workpieces
  • Post-processing of complex workpieces possible
  • Shorter cycle times
  • Up to 1 million workpieces per year
  • Long durability of the systems at low maintenance effort

Result: The advantages of deburring cells over manual workplaces prevail and reflect the necessity of digitalization in particular in small series. In light of the current development, also in relation to Industry 4.0, manual workplaces are replaced more and more by robotics or automated systems in the course of the next few years.
